Spanish Basque Country gets EV recharging network alongside some gas pumps
Posted Nov 3rd 2009 4:09PM by Xavier Navarro

The Basque Government in Spain has announced an agreement with Repsol to install recharging points for EVs at gasoline refueling stations. These EV stations would be safely separated from gasoline pumps but will be installed near already existing infrastructure. The plan was announced by Repsol's CEO Antoni Brufau, the Basque Prime Minister Patxi López and the Director of the Basque Institute of Energy, Bernabé Unda. Repsol is Spain's largest gasoline distributor and the world's 15th largest oil company. The Basque country is also the site of one of Mercedes' van manufacturing facility in the city of Vitoria. The Basque government also announced that Mercedes was set to build all-electric vans in this factory.

So you're supposed to sit there for 8 hours while your batteries recharge? I wonder how much of a charge you could get by sitting there the same amount of time it takes to fill up your tank.

In an emergency you can charge up a battery 70-80% in no time. That will get you going for a while.

I don't read Spanish (or Basque), but I would assume that these would be the higher voltage "quick-charge" outlets.
I wonder what the rate will be to use them?

It would be a convenience thing if it is too expensive people would skip it and recharge at home but I think local governments could mandate that at least 20% carry a charge point.

It's not a just "convenience thing". For BEVs to be accepted by the general public, they need a vast infrastructure of these sort of charging stations so that the owners can drive wherever, whenever. Nissan's Leaf test also requires these same sort of infrastructure guarantees.

From the Google translated version of the linked article, I didn't see anything about the charging network being at gas stations nor anything about at what power they would charge.
If they are at gas stations, I would hope these are fast chargers because really... who wants to wait around at the gas station. Level 2+ and slower charging should be at destinations, like malls, restaurants, movie theaters, etc.

Although it seems that the charging station won't get much use... it shows how easy it is to just install one...Take that hydrogen infrastructure!

Now we just need some electric cars and not the slow junk that's out now from China.

Dear, xuchaoxiong%, unless you start selling BYD products over the net you really are in the wrong place and wasting your time.

"or BEVs to be accepted by the general public, they need a vast infrastructure of these sort of charging stations so that the owners can drive wherever, whenever."
Not true... yes the public would LIKE to continue with the SAME EXACT HABITS that they are used to. But electric cars are being accepted despite the limitations on range and full recharge time.
When people actually stop and think about it, they quickly realize that they would only NEED 100+ miles in one day every couple of months. Rural people probably not.
It would be much easier to just rent towable range extenders until batteries and infrastructure meet customer's actual needs.
